Calculating percentage change is a key skill in general, but very important to personal finance. Investment returns. Budget comparisons and adjustments. Salary Analysis. Expenses analysis. All of these areas of finance require the understanding of this calculation. It’s a simple calculation, but indispensable. I use it regularly as a metric in my Balance Sheet and Income Statement analysis.

If have a negative value for the original number, the above formula won’t work and can be adjusted by adding an absolute value section to correct for the negative:

In the 4th, 5th and 6th examples, the numbers increase over the original numbers, but the calculation registers as a negative change. Thus, we need to adjust the calculation to accommodate. Hence the below better calculation.
